Signs of vitamin D deficiency!

Regular monitoring of vitamin D levels is important, as advised by Dr. Manoj Vithlani, a senior consultant physician and diabetologist at HCG Hospitals in Ahmedabad.

Experts emphasize the importance of recognizing the signs of vitamin D deficiency, particularly in a tropical country like India where a significant number of people are affected by it. “Vitamin D deficiency in Indians is still as high as 68 per cent. Not only is it seen in urban areas, it is also seen in rural areas. Reasons for this include urbanisation, lifestyle, skin colour, dress code, and most importantly, our genetic predisposition,” said Dr Aparna Bhanushali, head of growth and scientific support at Haystack Analytics.

Identifying and addressing vitamin D deficiency is crucial in order to overcome its potential health impacts. Fatigue, weakness, low energy levels, and a general sense of weakness are commonly observed signs that may indicate a deficiency, according to nutritionist Ruchita Batra.
“If you find yourself frequently fatigued, even after getting enough sleep, it might be worth considering your vitamin D levels,” said Batra in a post on Instagram.

She also stated:

1. A weakened immune system and frequent illnesses may indicate a deficiency in vitamin D. The vitamin plays a vital role in supporting immune function, and low levels can increase susceptibility to infections, colds, and the flu. If you experience frequent illness or have difficulty recovering, it may be a sign of low vitamin D levels.

2. Inadequate vitamin D levels can result in weak bones and compromised calcium absorption, leading to bone pain, muscle aches, and joint discomfort. If you have unexplained or persistent pain in your bones, muscles, or joints, it could be a sign of vitamin D deficiency, as the vitamin plays a crucial role in bone health.

3. Low levels of vitamin D have been associated with mood disorders like depression, anxiety, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), as the vitamin plays a role in mood regulation. If you experience frequent mood changes or notice a decline in your mental well-being, it may be worth considering vitamin D deficiency as a potential factor. “If you notice a significant change in your mood, especially during the colder months or when you have limited sun exposure, it could be related to vitamin D deficiency,” said Batra adding that slow weight loss can be another possible sign.

Vitamin D plays a vital role in various metabolic pathways and is implicated in the development of conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and reduced bone density. Its deficiency can have widespread effects on overall health and well-being. “It is, therefore, very important to identify and overcome the deficiency. This can be done by first identifying any genetic predisposition to vitamin D deficiency, monitoring vitamin D levels, and then supplementing vitamin D. This can be done by a loading dose with higher levels of Vitamin D, followed by supplementation as per medical consultation,” said Dr Bhanushali.

Dr. Manoj Vithlani, an internal medicine specialist and diabetologist at HCG Hospitals in Ahmedabad, suggests that spending more time outdoors and increasing sun exposure can be beneficial for addressing vitamin D deficiency. “Consuming vitamin D-rich foods such as fatty fish, fortified dairy products, egg yolks, and taking vitamin D supplements can help replenish levels,” said Dr Vithlani.

Regular monitoring of vitamin D levels is recommended for individuals to ensure adequate levels and address any deficiencies. “Resolving it entirely may depend on the severity of the deficiency, the individual’s medical conditions, etc. However, with proper guidance, vitamin D deficiency can be significantly improved and managed, allowing individuals to regain their vitality and well-being,” said Dr Vithlani.
