Tips for managing acne in summer through skincare routines and lifestyle changes!
Higher temperatures and increased humidity boost sweat gland activity, leading to more sweating. This can clog pores and worsen acne or pimples. To combat summer acne, adopting tailored skincare routines and making necessary lifestyle changes is crucial.
Summer Acne Triggers Explained:
According to Dr. Kusumika Kanak, Consultant Dermatologist at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital in Pune’s Hadapsar, the summer season introduces higher humidity and temperature fluctuations. These factors can increase oil production in the skin, exacerbating acne. Additionally, excessive perspiration during this time can lead to clogged pores due to oil and debris, potentially exacerbating acne and other skin issues.
Dr. Rajesh Jaria, Consultant of Internal Medicine at PD Hinduja Hospital and MCR in Khar, emphasized the importance of specialized skincare solutions, particularly sunscreens, in managing acne during the summer. He noted that increased exposure to UV radiation during this season can lead to sunburn and weaken the skin’s protective barrier, making it more susceptible to various skin issues.
To address these challenges, Dr. Jaria stressed the need for customized skincare routines. He highlighted the role of sunscreen in protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, which are intensified during summer months. He recommended using oil-free sunscreens for oily, acne-prone skin, while for dry, sensitive skin, sunscreens containing hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides are beneficial.
Additionally, Dr. Jaria recommended the following tips to prevent acne:
- Choose Gentle Cleansers and Lightweight Moisturizers: Avoid occlusive, oil-based moisturizers and makeup that can clog pores and contribute to acne formation.
- Stay Hydrated and Eat a Healthy Diet: Proper hydration and a balanced diet help maintain skin health and reduce the risk of acne breakouts.
- Wear Breathable Clothing: Opt for cotton and other breathable fabrics to minimize skin irritation and allow the skin to breathe.
- Post-Workout Skincare: Take a shower after workouts to cleanse the skin of sweat and bacteria that can lead to body acne.
- Use Non-Comedogenic Products: Choose skincare products labeled as non-comedogenic or oil-free to avoid pore-clogging and acne.
By incorporating these skincare practices and lifestyle adjustments, individuals can effectively manage acne and maintain healthy skin throughout the summer season.
