“During this season, the cold and less humid weather can lead to skin dryness, flakiness, and irritation. The decrease in temperature and humidity causes the skin to lose its natural hydration, making it more sensitive. Exposure to strong winds and fluctuating temperatures can result in chapped or windburned skin,” explains Dr. Chebbi.

Dr. Gitika Sanodia Biyani, a dermatologist, cosmetologist, and trichologist at Dr. LH Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, Mumbai, also highlights that winter can be a time when allergens like dust mites, mold, and pollen become more prominent. These allergens may trigger skin allergies or sensitivities.

However, it’s not all bad news. On the positive side, the lower sun intensity during winter can be less harmful to the skin, reducing the risk of sunburn and sun damage.

Here’s how to adapt your skincare routine for the winter season:

  1. Moisturize: Use a rich, hydrating moisturizer to combat dryness and protect your skin’s moisture barrier.
  2. Sunscreen: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to shield your skin from UV rays, which can still be harmful during the less intense winter sun.
  3. Exfoliation: Gently exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and encourage cell turnover. Use a mild exfoliant once every 7-10 days to avoid over-exfoliating.
  4. Hydration: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to combat dryness and maintain healthy skin from within.
  5. Lip balm: Use a quality lip balm to keep your lips hydrated and prevent chapping.
  6. Dress in layers: Protect your skin from harsh winds and temperature fluctuations by dressing in layers and covering up.
  7. Avoid hot showers: Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, so opt for lukewarm showers to prevent excessive dryness.
