On World Tourism Day, the Dima Hasao council unveiled a draft tourism policy outlining the development of five distinct travel circuits for visitors.
Dima Hasao, often referred to as the “Switzerland of the Northeast,” is now focusing on leveraging its breathtaking natural beauty to draw tourists and establish itself as the “cleanest district” in India. This hilly region in Assam, previously notorious for militancy, is making efforts to rebrand itself as one of the most serene and captivating tourist destinations in the region, according to officials from the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC).
The Dima Hasao council, in celebration of World Tourism Day, has unveiled a draft tourism policy aimed at developing five distinct circuits for travelers. This initiative seeks to capitalize on the district’s scenic beauty and promote it as the “cleanest district” in India. According to Hen Samuel Changsan, Chief Executive Member (in-charge) of NCHAC, this policy reflects the aspirations of the people in Dima Hasao and their desire to bolster the tourism sector in addition to meeting basic needs.
The district, known for its natural beauty, is keen to develop tourism infrastructure and promote peace, as it was previously impacted by militancy. Changsan stated that improved infrastructure in areas such as roads, water supply, and telecommunications has occurred in recent years. Additionally, the region has seen improvements in the education sector, leading to a more educated workforce, which is crucial for tourism development.
Zed Nunisa, Tourism Advisor, emphasized the vision to make Dima Hasao entirely plastic-free and position it as the cleanest district in India. The goal is to attract tourists by ensuring cleanliness and greenery throughout the district.
Nunisa detailed plans to establish five tourism circuits: adventure, eco and rural, agriculture, cultural, and festival. Umrangso has been developed as a destination wedding tourism spot, with a golf course adding to its appeal.
Monjit Naiding, NCHAC Member (Tourism In-charge), highlighted that the draft policy aims to standardize homestays, lodges, and hotels, ensuring a comfortable stay for tourists.
Dima Hasao is well-connected by road and rail, making it easily accessible to visitors. The district’s railway division dates back to 1895, and it boasts picturesque landscapes, tunnels, and bridges. The Lumding-Silchar broad gauge line and the ‘Mahasarak’ road tunnel near Maibang have significantly enhanced connectivity and interest in the region.
Tourism in Dima Hasao received a boost with the introduction of the Vistadome Tourist Special Train Services between Guwahati and Haflong in August 2021. The district, known for its stunning weather and natural beauty, offers numerous attractions such as Jatinga, Hajong Lake, Laisong, Maibang, and Umrangso, ideal for mountaineering, tracking, rafting, water sports, and eco-tourism. It serves as a hub for botanical and zoological studies and educational purposes.
